My soul upon the forfeit, that your lord

PORTIA

Then you shall be his surety. Give him this

And bid him keep it better than the other.

ANTONIO

Here, Lord Bassanio; swear to keep this ring .

But Antonio’s soul is forfeit at the moment he makes the pledge, because Bassanio must still love Antonio as much as he did before, and Portia has cleverly staged a wedding ceremony between Antonio and Bassanio.

Bassanio’s love for Antonio is a ‘Shakespearean’ riddle in the play: if Antonio represents the Christ, and Bassanio is a crypto-Jew, then why doesn’t Bassanio hate Antonio and crave revenge rather than love and fellowship? This is quickly followed by another riddle, as Portia announces:
